I’m Kanesha Mitchell, born Kanesha Nesbitt, from little old Spartanburg, SC. I attended the best high school in the land, Spartanburg High School, and graduated from USC Upstate with a BA in Information Management Systems and a minor in Communications. In 2012, I married my dream guy, Demetrius Mitchell. Fast forward to 2016, we welcomed our first baby, Mason Nathaniel Mitchell, into the world!
Ever since high school, I have had the desire to plan and coordinate events. I would always be the person to plan any event whether it was a small get together or a trip somewhere. I was the go-to person. Some of my friends would say I was a bit of a control freak, but I say I just like things to be in order! Lol! In 2008, I planned and executed my first event. It was my (now) husband’s graduation party! I got my first taste of what it’s like to truly plan and execute an event from top to bottom.
From that point, I decided to go forward with starting my own wedding and event planning company! I talked it over with my husband and two friends, Nikki Foster and Lance Wardlaw, and they were super supportive and even helped me by giving me suggestions on how to start. I’m forever grateful to them for giving me the encouragement I needed to start.
About Très Chic Events
In 2010, I stepped out on faith and Très Chic Events was born! I chose the name Très Chic because it is French for very stylish, and when I think of the French culture, I think of love, fashion, style, and modern. I wanted people to think of those four concepts when they heard the name Très Chic Events. I was so eager to showcase my skills and put them to use with the start of my venture, however I didn’t get my first client until the following year. I was extremely eager to execute my first bride’s big day! April and Nathan Whitworth took a chance on me, and that chance jump started my wedding planning career! I’m forever grateful to them.
In 2012, I saw a need for additional help due to the increase in bookings from new clients. That’s when Pamela Young joined the Très Chic Team as my Assistant Coordinator. She is still with me today and I honestly could not run my business as smoothly as I do without her support. She is my eyes and ears when I am not around and corrects any errors before our clients see them. As business continued to grow I decided to offer décor as a service to our clients. This meant adding more support to my team to handle the added obligations. Not only did my supportive husband jump in to help, I also added two more members to our team—Wadiya Woodward and Laketa Jeter.
My husband is truly a background kind of guy. He’d rather my light shine brightly and, if the light dims, he’ll adjust the bulb. He backs me 100% and is there always to correct me if something is off in the business. He also collaborates with me on ways to increase the business. He’s my #1 supporter! Wadiya and I have been friends since kindergarten, and I knew that she’d always have my best interests in mind and would be the perfect person to add to my team. I know many say that you shouldn’t do business with friends, but we are the exception to the rule. My cousin, Laketa, and I have been close since childhood. Not only is she an amazing singer whom I’ve booked for many events, but she’s also a hard worker who is also dedicated to the business of making brides’ dreams come true. These two ladies have been a part of my life for many years, and it was an easy decision for me to bring them on.
Approach to Clients
There are businesses of all sizes that need new customers. The approach of a business to gain new clients is key when asking them to spend money on your services. Even if the potential customer fits the targeted profile, he or she may not become a client. To gain a person’s business, you must prepare extensively, develop a detailed plan for the potential client, and execute your plan professionally.
Social media and word of mouth has been very instrumental in finding new clients. Many of my past clients have referred me to their friends for event organizing. And friends of clients have been impressed by the work of the Très Chic team and have hired us to organize their own events. I develop a relationship with each client, getting to know them personally. This means that, as their planner, I sometimes become their friend or even counselor. I’m grateful that they each have allowed me into their personal spaces and they trust me enough to know that their thoughts or words are safe with me. I take pride in that.
My knowledge of the wedding industry has grown immensely over the years. There were many people who didn’t think there was a market for wedding planners and they never thought I’d be successful. One of my biggest fans, besides my husband and team, is my mother, Spicy Holbert. Yes, that is her birth name by the way. Lol. She would always tell me to ignore the naysayers and do what I have been destined to do. I took that advice and ran with it!
So, you ask again, who is Kanesha Mitchell? I am a girl from a small town who had a dream of becoming a wedding planner. I stepped out on faith and God continues to lead the way. Along with my amazing husband, family, and supportive team, the only way to go is up!
