Book Fall Fun, an event designed to appeal to a diverse audience of mystery readers, cheese lovers, whisky connoisseurs, and advocates of healthy diets, is set for 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, November 4, at Split Creek Farm, a Grade-A goat dairy, in Anderson County.
Linda Lovely, author of the Brie Hooker Mysteries set on a fictional Upstate South Carolina goat farm, arranged the event with M. Judson Booksellers, Six & Twenty Distillery, and Split Creek Farm for the launch of Bones To Pick, the first book in the humorous series.
The event will feature free samples of Split Creek’s award-winning cheeses, free tastings of Six & Twenty’s premium hand-crafted spirits, and, of course, signed copies of Lovely’s Bones To Pick, published by Henery Press, LLC. M. Judson Booksellers of Greenville will handle the book sales.
Visitors will have a chance to get acquainted with the farm’s free-range animal population, which includes some 350 goats, a pot-bellied pig, Great Pyrenees guardian and Border collie herd dogs, and chickens. Book Fall Fun will be held rain or shine as the farm venue has ample tents for inclement weather.
“Split Creek Farm is a perfect setting for my book launch as it inspired the fictional Udderly Kidding Dairy where my main characters live,” says Lovely. “I first visited Split Creek Farm around the time Dr. Glen Quattlebaum, our family doctor, was encouraging me to consider vegan fare in a move to a healthier diet. That’s how I hatched the idea for two characters—a young vegan chef and her dedicated carnivore aunt—living together on a goat dairy. I could already hear them arguing about dinner menus.”
Six & Twenty Distillery was invited to join the fun since another member of the Brie Hooker Mystery cast is the owner of a fictional local distillery, Magic Moonshine, which is expanding from its legal moonshine base to include the type of fine whiskies offered by Six & Twenty Distillery. The Powdersville, SC, distillery mashes, ferments and distills local grains on site with a custom Artisan Still Design for the perfect balance of flavor and aroma.
In a nod to Brie Hooker’s efforts to lure her aunt into eating more vegetarian fare, M. Judson Booksellers will also have some of its most popular vegetarian and vegan cookbooks for sale at Book Fall Fun.
Lovely, who lives in Upstate South Carolina, is the award-winning author of five other mystery-suspense novels. She is a member of International Thriller Writers, Sisters in Crime and Romance Writers of America.
Cindy Sample, national best-selling author of the Laurel McKay Mysteries, calls Lovely “a master at combining humor, suspense and romance …. Between the four-legged farmyard shenanigans, the two men vying for Brie Hooker’s favor, the formidable task of proving her aunt’s innocence, plus the villain’s attempts to end her life, this book is a thrill-a-minute read.”
